A biomarker has been identified in the blood that could help predict a person's risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

In the study, published in the journal Neurology, blood samples were taken from 99 women, between 70 and 79 years old, in which the presence of a fatty compound, associated with inflammation and cell death, called ceramide was looked for.

These women were followed for 9 years, and of them 27 developed dementia and 18 were diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease.

The results showed that women with the highest levels of ceramides were ten times more likely to develop Alzheimer's, and those with medium levels of the biomarker were almost eight times more likely to develop the disease than those with the lowest levels of it. compound.
